01What this case video is about
KBIZ (중소기업중앙회, the Korea Federation of SMEs) is Korea's national organization for small and medium enterprises. This official video is the second installment of the standout-case series for the "large–SME win-win smart-factory build support program," and the subtitle speaks directly to the hesitant small shop: "a smart factory that even small companies can build—and it's not hard"[1].
To understand this video, you first have to understand the scheme behind it.
02The win-win model: big firms send people and money to bring small shops along
"상생 (sangsaeng, win-win)" is a keyword of Korean industrial policy—big companies and SMEs prospering together. The structure of the win-win smart-factory program is a three-way split: government subsidy + big-company funding and staff + partial SME co-payment; the most famous version is run by Samsung Electronics—sending its own manufacturing experts into both supply-chain and non-supply-chain SME factories, teaching from on-floor improvement (5S, flow, visual management) up to data collection and systems[1].
This design simultaneously solves the three classic gaps in SME transformation:
- Money: the subsidy absorbs most of the cost, so the small shop can afford it;
- People: the big company's manufacturing experts mentor on-site—the very thing Germany's Mittelstand-Digital (see the Germany piece) does through public centers, but Korea has big companies do it;
- Motivation: supply-chain binding—once a supplier's quality and delivery are digitalized, the anchor firm benefits directly, so the mentoring is investment, not charity[3].
03The cases' shared opening move: process first, equipment second
The video series deliberately picks cases that are "small and not hard," and their shared structure is worth noting: the opening move is never buying equipment, but process tidying and data capture—turning production records from handwritten to systematic, making inventory and operations visible, and keeping quality data[1]. This is exactly the order principle of automation theory: standardize first, then digitize the data, then automate[2]—get the order backwards and expensive equipment only automates the chaos.
The subtitle "not hard (어렵지 않은)" is therefore not marketing spin but methodology: lower the first step to a height a small shop can reach on tiptoe, and transformation begins. This also echoes the WEF's observation on reskilling—transformation usually stalls on people and process, not technology[4].
04Taiwan's win-win: starting from supply-chain trust
Taiwan has no Samsung-style win-win scheme, but the same dynamic is at work in the supply chain: anchor firms' supplier audits increasingly look at digital capability—quoting response speed, first-article report quality, the traceability of process data. In other words, Taiwan's version of "win-win" votes with orders: the digitalized supplier is trusted first and gets the order first.
For Taiwan's SME machine shops, three principles from the Korean case are worth taking:
- Start with a first step that isn't hard: for a job shop, the most practical starting point for data capture is drawings and machining prep—AI reads 2D drawings, builds models, generates code, simulates and verifies dimensions, and every job automatically leaves a structured record (see the Complete Guide to CNC Automatic Programming)—accomplishing both "process digitalization" and "efficiency gains" in one step.

- Make good use of Taiwan's version of the resources: institute mentoring and industry subsidies, while not a win-win scheme, point the same way—a shop that comes with a digital foundation of its own takes in resources several times more efficiently than others (the same conclusion appears in the KAMP piece).
